A Clinical Review of 170 Cases of Inguinal Hernia

Abstract
|
|
|
One hundred and seventy herniorrhaphies which were operated at the Department of General surgery, Chung Ang Medical college durning the past 5 years period from January 1981 to December 1985, have been reviewed.
The results are as follows
1) The definite predominance of male over female(6 : 1) is noted.
2) The larger number of cases are from the neonates to 15 years of age in 66.5¡Æ0.
3) Inguinal hernia is seen on the right side in 126 cases (74.1%), on the left side 34 cases (20.0%), and bilateral in 10 cases(5.9%).
4) Indirect type is in 167 cases(98.2%), direct type in 3 cases(1.8%), and combined type is not found.
5) Diagnosis is done by clinical history and physical examination in almost all cases. 6) The incarceration are in 19 cases(11.l% ).
7) Twenty cases(11.7%) of all patients combined with hydrocele and seven cases(4.1%) with cryptorchism.
8) The most prominent symptoms and signs are buldging on the inguinal region(65.4%) and scrotal swelling(21.1%).
9) 108 cases (63.5%) of all hernias are repaired by high ligation, 42 cases (24.7%) by Bassini method, 7 cases(4.1%) by Mcvay, 7 cases(4.1%) by Shouldice method. and 1 cases by Halsted method.
10) The mean hospital day is 6.6 days.
11) The postoperative complications including wound infection, pneumonia, recurrent hernia, hematoma are noted 6 cases of total
170 cases repaired.
